NEW ZEALAND CUP WON BY CALIBRATE

Mr W. S. Goosman's brilliant Gold Nib colt. The Unicorn, won the New Zealand Derby running away from his 13 opponents. The absence of early pace suited The Unicorn, which outsped the others in the final sprint, winning by four lengths from Dunkirk, which just got up to beet My Hero for second. Zenith attracted attention to her New Zealand Oaks prospects by finishing brilliantly for 1 nosc behind My Hero. The Unicorn was bred by Mrs G. E. Grigg, Long beach. Ashburton, Mr Goosman purchasing him as a yearling at the national sales at Trentham. He is Mr Goosman's first New Zealand Derby winner, and he adds a notable chapter to the fast-growing record of that owner in important races at Riccarton. Horses to carry Mr Goosman’s colours to victory at Riccarton in recent years included Town Survey (Grand National Hurdles. 1943), Tauloch (Churchill Stakes. 1948). Flying Attack (Grand National Steeplechase, IM9) and Biassed (Winter Cup, 1950). The programme was run in fine weather, but conditions were marred by a strong easterly wind. The track was in good order. The total sator turnover was a record £194373 10s, including £22.896 10s on the double. On the corresponding day last year the win-and-place tctalisator handled £154,897 10s. Pre-race betting on the New Zealand Cup proved popular and doub’es betting was heavy. Calibrate, the New Zealand Cup winner, was third favourite with doubles bettors, and he carried 5152 tickets. In the Stewards* Handicap The Hob carried 580 tickets. Lord Moss being most heavily supported with 1576 tickets The Cap Running St. Bruno was the early pacemaker in the New Zealand Cup. but before half a mile had been covered he was displaced by Jamell. With one mile and a half to run, Jamell was a length in front of St. Bruno, Langham, and Paday Joe. which were followed by Lord Revel, Pierre, Coral Are. massed, Signify. Night Owl k c /«xTan. Renowned, and Beaumaris. wi»h CkHbtate at the tail of the field. Jamell had foeregsec his lead slightly with one mile and a "quarter to run, St Bi uno. Langham, * and Paddy Joe bene closest to him, then following Pierre. Lord Revel. Coral Arc, Night Owl, Biassed. Beaumaris, and Signify. The pace had been slow and Valley Gold, one of the last away, was up alongside Paddy Joe behind the pacemaker at the mile, next in the lunning being St Bruno. Langham, Coral .ire. Night Owl. Biassed, Pierre, and Beaumaris, Signify being next Calibrate and Earldale were at the tail of the field racing to the half -mile, where Jamell held his lead from Paddy Joe. Valley Gold. St. Bruno. Langham. Night Owl, Coral Arc, Pierre, Beaumaris, Renowned. and Biassed. Jamell. Paddy Joe, and Valley Gold were practically in line on the home turn ahead of St. Bruno, Night Owl. Ingham, and Signify, which were followed by Coral Arc, Beaumaris, Pierre, and Biassed. Calibrate and Earldale still had the rest of the field in front of them. Jamell was In front at the furlong from Valley Gold. Signify, Langham. St. Bruno, and Pierre, and Calibrate was making his challenge on the outer. Calibrate quickly closed on the leaders and, after reaching the iront at the halffuriong, he won Dy half a length from Earldale, which came late on the scene and was going slightly better than the winner at the finish. St. Bruno was a length further back, third, and a head in front of Jamell. Then there was a length to the fifth horse, Langham, and half a length to Beaumaris and Rer owned together. Eighth was Biassed, and he was followed to the post by Valley Gold. Night Owl. Pierre, and The Laird. Kosher last of the bunch, and Lord Revel was pulled up, trotting down the straight. Lord Revel faltered when going well near the half-mile, and his ridbr. N. A. Crombie, thought at first that the Revelation gelding had broken a leg. Stewards* Handicap The Hob finished strongly on the inner over the last two furlongs to win the Stewards* Handicap for his Moagiel ownertrainer, D. P. Wilson. The finish for the minor placings was a keen one. Te Kooti coming home brilliantly for second from the favourite, Ptolemy. Revelry was slow away, and Paper Strip led down to the course proper by half a length from Infinity. Lord Mobs. Johnny Peep. Bosun, Potlemy, and The Hob on the inner. Te Kooti Mt that stage was near the tail of the field. The Hob was pulled out from the rails to run past Paper Strip outside the furlong, where Ptolemy and Lord Mos® were challenging and Te Kooti was closing the gap to the leaders in the centre of the track. Ridden right out, The Hob kept clear of all challengers, and the fastfinishing Te Kooti got up to beat Ptolemy by a nose for second. Paper Strip was three-quarters of a length back, fourth. iust shading Trinidad and Castlebrae >uvaata was seventh, ahead of Lord Moss. Infinity, Voltaic, Johnny Peep, Apex. Bosun, Battel, and Revelry. Easy for The Unicorn The Unicorn was in front for the last •lx turlongs of the New Zealand Derby, and he outclassed his opponents, drawing away in the straight to win by tour lengths. There was a great finish for the minor placings, Dunkirk finishing solidly to beat My . Hero by a head for second with the fast-finishing Zenith a nose away, fourth. Argonaut was last a Way, Royal Man and My Hero also being slow. Dunkirk and perception led past the mile and a quarter from St. Columba, Hutton, Felicitous, The Unicorn, Winslow Boy, Eastern Monarch, and Zenith, the tail-enders being My Hero and Argonaut. There was little pace on as they ran to the nine furlongs, where Dunkirk was clear of Perception. Hutton, Felicitous, and The Unicom. There were changes in the next three furlongs, The Unicorn and Hutton leading past the six furlongs from St. Columba. Felicitous. Dunkirk, Perception, Eastern Monarch. Winslow Boy. and Royal Mao. St. Columba joined Tne Unicorn in front just after passing the half-mile, and at that stage Dark Courage was at , the tail of the field, with Zenith just in i front of him.
