SECOND DAY AT RICCARTON

Canterbury Cub An Attraction

BEAUMARIS FAVOURED Th*. Canterbury Cup, the oldeettttebhshed race in the history ot the Canterbury Jockey Club, will be an outstanding attraction on the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton to-day. The Canterbury Cup was first run in 1855, and with twtj exceptions it has been staged regularly. Beaumaris is expected to embellish his grand record in to-day’s race., In the Canterbury Cup a year ago he was sensationally beaten by Bhutan after he had won the New Zealand Derby and Churchill Stakes. Beaumaris ran a great race under the top weight of 8-5 in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, finishing sixth. He WDuld have probably finished closer if the race had been more solidly run, his lack of ability to sprint home weighing against him. Under weight-for-age conditions today his rider, C, T. Wilson, will probably ensure that the race is solidly run all the way. Which will allow the Beau Repaire four-year-old to use his real stamina to the best advantage. The Unicorn, the New Zealand Derby winner, and one of three three-year-olds in the field, will bo well supported, as ateo will Jamelk which made a bold bid to lead throughout in the New Zealand Cup, in which he finished fourth. Another likely candidate la Super Snipe, whieh, next to Sweet Spray, was the outstanding three-year-old filly last season. Super Snipe won the Great Autumn Handicap the laat time she was brought to Riccarton. She did not race on Saturday. To-day’s double will be on the Fendalton and the Jockey Club Handicaps, Four New Zealand Cup runners. Robin’s Reward, Pierre. Renowned, and Paddy Joe, are engaged In the Fendalton Handicap. the distance of which is about one mile and a quarter. Renowned did best of them in the cup. finishing sixth, a litle over three lengths behind the winner. Calibrate. Pierre was eleventh to finish, and Robin’s Reward and Paddy Joe were well back. The shorter journey to-day is likely to favour Pierre most, this Royal Chief gelding having shown outstanding form over one mile. Smart Riccarton-trained gallopers which did not race on the first day art Jolly Sailor and Detention. Jolly Sailor at his last start finished second to Signify in the mite Pearce Handicap at Trantham. He was running on strongly and left the impression that he will master one mile and a quarter. Detention’s preparation for the New Zealand Cup was interrupted, and it was decided not to run him tn the two mile handicap. Ha galloped attractively at Riccarton last week, and he should run well. Flying Sovereign finished third in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday, just failing ‘to stall off late challenges from Profane and Prawns. This smart Airway mare had to be eased up for a few days when a leg poisoned after the Wellington meeting, and that set-back, slight as it was, could have meant the difference between winning and finishing third. There was much merit in Profane’e success on Saturday as he appeared to be hopelessly placed on the home .turn. If he can reproduce a performance of equal merit he should race well again to-day. Balkis and Arctotis appeal most of the light-weights. Jockey Club Handicap On the strength of his close second to Pro ane in the Riccarton Handicap on the first day, the Salmagundi gelding, Prawns, will be favoured for the Jockey Club Handicap. which is a furlong shorter. Prawns ran Profane to a head on Saturday after being slow away. It was an effort above the average. Resolute was unable to ready the front in the Riccarton Handicap, but he was well up to the straight only to fade over the final stages. The shorter journey and a more favourable barrier position should, help this good galloper to make a better snowing to-day. CastlebCae has made his mark as a sprinter, and his form over one mile has been good. His task may be eased by his drop in the weights to 8-0 from 8-7, which he carried in the Stewards’ Handicap on the first day. when he finished sixth. The handicap is headed by Voltaic, which finished in the Stewards’ Handicap. The longer journey is llkelv to favour this Revelation gelding, which In his last appearance over this distance carried 9-1 into third place in the Pearce Handicap at Trentham. Statesman was fifth to finish in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday, fading sllght’y over toe last furlong. This striking Bulandshar four-year-o’d may have benefited from that race. At peak form he Js abover the average. Magical has shown little form, but Duvaals. winner of two races on the recent Southland circuit, should run well over this distance. A useful light-weight In the field is Great Way. which was one of the pacemakers to the straight in the Riccarton Handicap, weakening into eighth place. Port Cooper High-weight On Saturday, Finance won the Suburban High-weight Handicap so decisively that his rise in the weights from 9-7 to 10-4 for the Port Codper High-weight may not stop hia winning run. Of the others which raced on Saturday, Beau Soir has

th* beet form eredentl»l«, th* comlstent Nightly gelding finishing second halt a length behind Finance. Gore form point* to a good showing from Home Circle, which won the Wendon High-welght on the first day, beating Granddaughter and Man o Kent Into the minor places. _ Th* Two-Yeu-Olde Scorned has found the Wingatui-tralned Silence a stumbling block on the road to a successful two-year-old career, but sila will not have Mr J. P. O'Brien's Tlrnai.oya gelding to contend with in the jrweli Handicap. She has a solid weight of 3-5 but that gnay not stop her from beating this field. She will be bracketed with Grenadier, which has shown promising form, and True Blend. Abenc*. the ran-ner-up to Bosky In the Spring Nursery Handicap on Saturday, appeals most of the light-weights, and Montana, wh.eh will be bracketed with Sea Hawk, will ho W^Xe“ S &^* ,h ““ rt Apprentices' Handicap The Airway colt, Slroeco, has brilliantly won his two races this Mason and he has good prospects of adding th* Apprentic iv Handicap to his record. Last start he w-n the Gore Racing Club’s Otama Haca Handicap, six furlongs, by two lengths in Imln 12 4-fisec. His first appearance this season was In the Ferry Novice Handicap at Wyndham. He led all the way, and won by six lengths, establishing a Southland record of 59 4-ssec for five furloncs Most formidable opposition for Slroc o may be provided by Dissenter, whose five starts this season have proouced three minor placings. The Lum, a winner at Gore, has speed, but she is handicapped by a wide barrier berth to-day. Stonyhurst Handicap Dunkirk and Hutton have the best ere dentials for the' Stonyhurst Handicap, which, is for three-year-oids. They were second and sixth respectively in the New Zealand Derby on Saturday, but to-day at the difference in the weights Hutmn may be capable of beating Dunkirk. Dunkirk is top weight with 9-5, and concedes Hutton Ig.lb. Of those below 9-0 Greetings should fare best. A winner end once placed in three starts, this Helis Peter colt may thoroughly extend tho.s higher in the handicap. .Ashley Handicap 'ey Handicap on th* first day. may w’n th* Ashley Handicap, which is run over a furlong furthar. th* Royal Chief goldUig was on* of th* pacemakers on Satur. day and finished a little over two lengths behind the winner. The consistent Entrancing again has good prospects of filling a place. The Southland hacks, Gay Gitana and Spice appeal moat of the others. Selections are: _Port Cooper High-Weight Handicap. Finance, Home Circle, Beau Soir. Irwell Handicap: Scorned-Grenadlvr-True Blend btacket, Montana—Sea Hawk bracket. Absence. Apprentices’ Handicap: Sirocco, Dissenter, The Lum. CORAL ARC LAME AFTER NEW ZEALAND CUP Coral Arc was unable to show his red ability in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday, when he was the 2-1 favourite. He had a recurrence of trouble th the nea foreleg during the face and finished well back. He was very lame after cooling out and will be unable to race for several months. • LEADING TRAINER AND APPRENTICE J. S. Shaw, the leading trainer last season, /and W. D. Skelton, the leading apl- - were presented with trophies bj the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Frey berg, at Riccarton on Saturday.
