LIGHT INDUSTRIAL ZONING
ADDINGTON RESIDENTS PROTEST A strong protest against the action of the City Council in declaring an area of back land in Disraeli street, Addington, a light industrial area was made in a petition from the occupiers of 26 houses in Disraeli and Selwyn streets to the town planning committee of the council. The petitioners said the land was purchased by the Addington-Spreydon Returned Services’ Association to establish a recreational centre which project was approved by tne residents The residents strongly objected io commercial interests obtaining a foothold in this residential area. The council adopted a recommendation that the petitioners be advised that there was nothing to stop the R.S.A. developing the land as a recreational area. The land v/as classified as light industrial for the following reasons: it was felt that because of its nearness to the railway and other industrial de ve’opment it must ultimately develop for industrial purposes; it would oe quite uneconomical to subdivide it for housing purposes; the nearness to the cemetery meant that residential development might not take nlace.
