FRENCH FRIGATE SUNK

35 OF COMPLEMENT MISSING

(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) PARIS, Sept. 16. The French frigate LaPlace today struck a magnetic mine on her way from Brest to St. Malo. Thirtyfive officers and men are missing out of the complement of 75. Tugs and other vessels rushed to the ship’s assistance, but the frigate sank rapidly. The survivors were rushed to Dinard, St. Malo and other nearby fishing ports, but bad weather hampered the rescue operations. U.S. SECRETARY OF DEFENCE (Rec. 7 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 15. The United States House of Representatives and the Senate to-day passed legislation to permit General George Marshall to serve as Secretary of Defence. President Truman will now submit General Marshall’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation.
