TARANAKI BEATS WELLINGTON

WINNING BACKS PLAY WELL

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. September 17. Taranaki soundly beat Wellington in a Rugby match at Athletic Park on Saturday. Taranaki won by 17 points to 9. Taranaki was infinitely more enterprising, both back and forward, and adopted admirable tactics against and with the strong wind. For Taranaki, Potier, Bowden, and Miller scored tries. One try was converted by Cockerill, who also kicked a penalty goal and Priest potted a goal. For Wellington, Jarden scored a try and kicked two penalty goals, giving a brilliant exhibition all day. Wellington had plenty of the ball, but were hamstrung at the base of the scrum and in the inside backs by quick-break-ing forwards and the resolute Taranaki backs, who were an intelligent set. Canterbury Team Beaten In a close curtain-raiser, the Wellington third grade representatives beat Canterbury. 14-11. For Wellington, N. Cameron (2), R. Martin, and A. Makeham scored tries, one of which was converted by K. Arthurs. D. Stark and C. Frazer each scored for Canterbury, and A. Cameron converted one try and kicked a penalty goal.
