WINNING SCORES 21 POINTS IN 20 MINUTES
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 17. In a game of remarkably varying fortunes, Northland beat Auckland by 31 points to 21 in a Rugby match at Eden Park on Saturday.
Northland scored seven tries to three, and after establishing an early lead scored 21 points in the last 20 minutes. Dunn, the centre three-quarters, scored three tries, Cherrington two, and Smith and Beazley one each. Isaacs converted four tries and Smith one. Gilmour, D. Kelly, and D. L. Kelly scored for Auckland, Gilmour converting all three tries and kicking two penalty goals. HAWKE’S BAY BEATS MANAWATU (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, Sept. 17. Hawke’s Bay beat Manawatu by 17 points to 16 in a Rugby match on Saturday. The home forwards were in great fettle against the Hawke’s Bay backs, and beat the defence repeatedly. Manawatu’s points came from four tries, two of which were converted. Hawke's Bay scored three tries (one converted) and two penalty goals. MARLBOROUGH WINS RATANA CUP (New Zealand Press Association) BLENHEIM, September 17. The Marlborough Maoris’ team retained the Ratana Cup, the major Maori Rugby trophy of the South Island, when it beat the combined Golden Bay-Motueka-Nel-son team by 18 points to 5 on Saturday. Marlborough has now held the trophy since 1948. The game was fast and open, but was marred by a high wind. RANGIORA BEATS KAIAPOI A match played at Rangiora on Saturday afternoon for the Mclntosh Shield between Rangiora and Kaiapoi was won by Rangiora by 12 points to 8. R. Grant scored a try for Rangiora and J. Wayland kicked three penalty goals. For Kaiapoi, Roberts scored a try, which he converted, and kicked a penalty goal. Mr H. Polenski was referee.
