ATOMIC ENERGY CONFERENCE

(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 7. Two hundred scientists from 14 countries—but not Iron Curtain countries—will assemble at Oxford to-day for a six-day conference on atomic energy.

The 150 overseas delegates were strictly scrutinised yesterday by the immigration authorities. They were required to show their passports and also to produce credentials confirming that they had been invited to the conference.

The lectures and discussions will not have a direct bearing on the atomic bomb or on harnessing atomic energy for industry. It is essentially a conference on basic research into the mysteries of the atom rather than on its practical application.
