WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Prebbleton.— -Gifts and flowers were presented to Mrs J. Giles and Miss L. Giles n y president (Mrs H. Prebble) at the monthly meeting Of the Prebbleton Women’s Institute. Mrs Giles, who is a foundation member of the institute and Miss Giles, who has been a member of the committee for many years are leaving the district soon. The presioent (Mrs J. Slack) presented a gift to Mrs P. Lewis, a much valued member, who was married recently. Sympathy was expressed with Mrs K. Askin, the institute’s first president, and with Mrs C. Hands, in their bereavements. Members agreed to assist in providing morning tea for the jubilee conference of the National Council of Women on the occastheir visit to Otahuna at the end of this month. Ten members agreed to join the dressmaking class to be established during the month. Thirteen members will represent the institute at the half-yearly federation meeting in Little River next month. Competitions arranged for the afternoon were won by Mesdames J. Wright, Burby, L. Smith, and C. Ussner. A report was given that members were meeting with success in their canvass of the district for funds for the united Nations Appeal for Children. Winners of the monthly competitions were Mesdames Toon, W. Downey. R. Mclntosh, H. Widdowson, and H. Prebble. Akaroa.— “Conditions in New Paleshne” as the subject of a talk given by Mr J. Pringle at the monthly meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. Mrs F. C. Newton presided. Correspondence included a letter from the Canterbury Federation, asking that members canvass the district for money for the United Nations’ Appeal for Children. Members decided to plant a rhododendron on the reserve to mark the centennial. Mrs H. Hamilton was appointed hospital visitor for the month, and Mesdames H. Hopkins and E. Woodill were chosen as link correspondents.
