Mrs A. Keith Hadfield (Fendalton) left last night for Wellington to attend a meeting of the standing committee of the Kindergarten Union, of which she is Dominion president.
Mr and Mrs A. H. Weir, Dr. and Mrs H. K. Allison, Dr. E. B. Reilly, Mr and Mrs W. R. Hamilton, Mr and Mrs John Jones, Mr and Mrs Cecil Brander, and Mr Stanley Fogg will leave next week for Rotorua, where the annual Dominion conference of the New Zealand Dental Association will open on September 18. Mr Weir is a former Dominion president of the association. Mr McKegg, of Palmerston North, is the present president, and Mr Claude White, of Hastings, is president-elect.
About 600 guests attended the successful centennial ball held last evening by the Canterbury Caledonian Society Pipe Band and organised by its Social committee. The guests of honour included the president of the society (Mr C. S. Thomas) and Mrs Thomas, the president of tire Highland Pipe Bands’ Association of Canterbury (Mr R. Will), the officer commanding the New Zealand Scottish Regiment (Major J. Beale), and the chief of* the New Zealand Scottish Society (Mr A. Gray). Music for the grand march and the highland schottische was provided by the band. Members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind were entertained at their monthly social yesterday afternoon by Maurice Liebert’s guitar pupils, who presented items from their revue, “Station G.U.X.” The compere was Mr J. Boughen. About 100 persons were present, and it was evident from their applause that they appreciated not only the standard of the entertainment but Mr Liebert’s generosity in making it available to them. Miss leneke Schot and Mr Reinier Odinot, both of Amsterdam, were married at St. James’ Church, Lower Hutt on Wednesday morning. The bridegroom, who has been m New Zealand for one year, is a member of the staff of the Department of Agriculture. His bride arrived from Holland three wqeks ago.
Judges for the Navy League’s Palmer Prize essay competition were decided at the monthly meeting of the executive committee of the Wellington branch of the Navy League, on Wednesday night. The subjects have been circulated to 316 schools throughout New Zealand, and the closing date will be October 12. The judges are Lieu-tenant-Commander W. Olphert, Lieu-tenant-Commander R. H. Carter. Commander F. E. Taylor, Colonel R. St. J. Beere, and Miss Betty Meynard. A letter has been received by the Junior Red Cross from Rewi Alley thanking members for a case of clothing and school requisites contributed by the children of the St. Albans School for use at Sandan, China. The case, which took two years to reach its destination, caused much excitement when the convoy was unloaded. At the end of the 1951 season, the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company will leave Stratford-on-Avon for a comprehensive tour in which New Zealand is to be included. This statement was made recently by 35-year-old Anthony Quayle, the director, to a London correspondent. South Africa, Canada, and Australia will also be visited during this “Commonwealth visit.” Mr Quayle is the yougest man ever to take the directorship of the Memorial Theatre. In spite of the theatre’s superb equipment. Mr Quayle has said he is still not satisfied. Apart from acting and directing the theatre, he is planning much reconstruction work. There is to be more seating; the dressing rooms are not well enough placed; and there are insufficient star dressing rooms it is said.
