WESTPORT CLUB’S MEETING

RYELAND IN FAVOUR FOR HACK HANDICAP

Ryeland may be capable of carrying top weight of 9-u to victory in tne Westport Hacx Handicap, one of the mam events on the nrst day A)f the Westport Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-morrow. The Nightlv—iviiss’ Myra gelding won two of nis six races as a three-year-old last season, nis best effort being his win in the Levels Hack Handicap, six furlongs, at the South Canterbury Hunt Clubs meeting in July. He met stronger opposition at his next ap6earance. which was in the Camla iack Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting, but he ran a good race for fourth. Ryeland raced twice at the Grand National meeting, finishing fifth in the Avonhead Handicap bn the first day and sixth in Fedcliffs Handicap on the third day. Winslow Boy disappointed in his race at Reefton last Saturday, but that was probably only a temporary lapse. The Foxbridge gelding’s form at the Grand National meeting was consistent. and his success in the first division of the Aylesbury Handicap on the third day was well earned.

Moonsail and New Shoes may fare best of the others.

In the absence of an outstanding form candidate, betting oh the Roche' Handicap, the first race of the day's totalisator double, will be well spread. The chances of Trinidad and Clair de Lune appeal most. Trinidad failed in the sprint at Reefton, but that was his first race for several months, and he may be nearer race-wining condition to-morrow. Clair de Lune is speedy and she may be able to keep clear of , her opponents. She would be more strongly in favour, however, over six furlongs. Trident and Reflect are others with chances in this field.

Chord has been raised 101 b for his decisive win in the County Handicap at Reefton last Saturday, and lie will meet Fyxen, which was four lengths away second, bn 51b worse terms. Chord is still at a handy place in the weights, and he may carry his 8-5 to another win. Peridot, fourth last Saturday, may also take part in the finish. Valley Gold has raced well In much stronger company, but he has not been consistent.
