TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI

RACING

ROVING ROBIN’S SMART SPRINT

“The Press" Special Service _ . ~ DUNEDIN, September 8. Roving Robin again provided the feature of the training at Wingatui this morning when he dashed over half a mile on the sand in 52 4-ssec. He carried more and was under a good hold at the finish. The Christopher Robin gelding should soon leave the maiden ranks. The stablemates, Turora and Waihopi, were associated in a useful schooling task over a round of the steeplechase course and their chances look bright in their engagements on Saturday. i Roving Robin, a candidate for the Vauxhall Handicap on Saturday, took 12 3-5 sec for his first furlong and showed dash . when completing his half mile in 52 4-5 sec.

Small But Speedy Nan, a novice three-year-old filly by Royal Chief from Astral Flash, was too godd for Kinlock Bridge over half a mile in 53 4-ssec, the opening furlong in 12 2-ssec. Nan is small, but she has ability. St. Columba galloped away from Sequoia at the end of a similar task in 54sec, the first furlong in 12 4-ssec. St. Columba will have prospects in the Trial Stakes, even* though he is drawn wide out. St. Bruno showed that he is holding his form well when he went over five furlongs In Imin 11 sec, the first two in 27 35sec. His connexions were dissatisfied with his weight at Wingatui and did not accept with him. He is undergoing a special preparation for the New Zealand Cup.

All Hurry was shading Weldrest at the end of five furlongs in Imin 12 4-ssec. Both horses are engaged in the Vauxhall Hack Handicap, and of the two All Hurry should do best.

Jamell’s Task Jamell was not hurried to take Imin 22 l-ssec for six furlongs, the first two in 25sec. He was loafing over the last furlong and a half and could have improved considerably. He will be hard to beat in the Tally-Ho Handicap if the track does not become soft.

Man o’ Kent was too good for Irish Pal in a run over six furlongs on the sand in Imin 24 l-ssec, the last half mile in 55 4-ssec.

Duvaals was let off with a quiet six furlongs in Imin 27 3-ssec. He looks nicely placed in the Tally-Ho Handicap with 8-1. Avonhead was of little use to Detract in a run over seven furlongs in Imin 39 3-ssec. They finished together, but Detract was under a strong hold. They ran the first half mile in 55 2-ssec. Turora Pleases Turora and Waihopi led Wandering Minstrel and Shank’s Pony in a run fiver seven of the steeplechase fences. The first-named pair finished full of running and should be prominent, in their respective engagements on Saturday. Waihopi nearly* came down at the sod wall near the mile, but he made a good recovery. Wandering Minstrel made a bad jump at the board fence. Shank’s Pony will start in the Hunt Cup Steeples. Encounter jumped well when he was sent over the brush double three times. Gleneagles was sent over two flights of the schooling hurdles but he did not impress, nor did Belgravia, Real Raid, and Hansel, which completed similar tasks separately. , .. . , Unless there is more rain the track should be in good order although on the slow side for Saturday. .
