WATERSIDE DISPUTE AT BLUFF
SETTLEMENT REACHED (New Zealand Press Association) INVERCARGILL, September 7. The Bluff watersiders’ claim for increased rates while unloading the phosphate cargo from the Italian vessel Cyclope has been settled. A meeting of the Port Committee yesterday came to an “amicable agreement” after a discussion lasting one hour and a half. It has not yet been announced what the agreement is. Boisterous weather yesterday prevented work being continued on the Cyclope, which is the only vessel in port. A claim for an extra Is an hour was made on Monday when 90 watersiders ceased work on the Cyclope because of the smell of the phosphate. Twenty-four hours later they agreed to return to work, but did not renounce their claims for extra money. The Watersiders engaged on the Cyclope were being paid an extra Is an hour phosphate money, and. in objecting, claimed an additional Is. which would make a total of 6s 3d an hour.
