FOOD PARCELS FOR BRITAIN
RED CROSS SOCIETY ' TO TAKE OVER (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 30. The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) announced to-day that the New Zealand Red Cross Society had agreed to undertake the work previously done by the Aid for Britain Council in the packing and sending of gift parcels to Britain. He recalled the work done under the auspices of the council during recent years with Mr F. P. Walsh as its chairman, but said that production problems had recently tended to change. Along with this had come a considerable improvement in Britain’s own economy and food supplies. The Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations (Mr P. C. Gordon-Walker) when in New Zealand recently had expressed his Government’s* appreciation of all that had been done in the aid for Britain campaign, but agreed that the time had now arrived when an active campaign was no longer justified in the light of conditions now existing in Britain. “In these circumstances it has been decided that the Aid for Britain Council and district committees should go into recess as from the end of this month, and the work of packing and dispatching parcels will in future be carried cut bv the Red Cross Society, and voluntary organisations,”; said Mr HoPand. He praised the work i of all who had been active in the aid i fnr Britain organisation, especially Mrj Walsh, who had guided the scheme to conspicuous success.
