CONFERENCES IN LONDON
MR F. W. DOIDGE TO ATTEND
MAY ALSO GO TO U.N. SESSION

New Zealand will be represented at two important British Commonwealth conferences in London next month by the Minister of External Affairs (Mr F. W. Doidge). The first conference of Commonwealth Ministers, called at the request cf the United Kingdom Government, will discuss general economic and trade questions. It will be followed by a 'meeting of the Consultative Committee of Commonwealth Ministers to consider the economic development of South-east Asia and the provision of technical assistance agreed to in principle st Colombo in January and at Sydney in May. Mr Doidge will be accompanied by the Secretary of External Affairs (Mr A. D. Mclntosh) and the Minister's private secretary (Mr H. P. Jeffery). The party hopes to leave Auckland by air for Lcndon on September 12, and will be away from New Zealand for about a month.
On his way back Mr Doidge hopes to attend the current session of the General Assembly of the United Nations at Lake Success. Another delegation will leave New Zealand soon to attend the trade talks opening at Torquay on September 16. It will consist of Mr J. P. D. Johnsen. Assistant Controller of Customs, and Mr G. J. Schmitt, of the Treasury Department. They will be joined in London by Mr J. B. Prendergast, the United Kingdom representative of the Department of Industries and Commerce.
The talkrare a further session of the contracting parties to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Earlier sessions were held at Geneva, Havana, and Annecy.
