EMPIRE ESSAY COMPETITION
AWARDS TO ENTRANTS IN N.Z.
Details of the results of the Empire essay competition held by the Royal Empire Society among schools of the British Commonwealth have now been received by the Canterbury branch of the society. There were three classes in the competition.
In Class A the subject was “Citizenship and Nationality in the Commonwealth as it Affects My Country.” There were 31 entries. The first prize was awarded to a pupil of a Welsh grammar school. The second prize, for “a hardly less brilliant essay,” according to the judges, was won by John Herbert Stubbs, of Waitaki Boys’ High School. Of the three entrants who were commended, one was a New Zealander, R. Sanders, of King’s College, Auckland.
In Class B 210 entries were received. The subject was “A Geographical and Historical Survey of a British Colony or one of the Dominions, other than your own.” Robert R. Dyer, a pupil of the Whangarei Boys’ High .School, received commendation in this section. Three New Zealand boys received commendation in Class C, in whicn there were 293 entries. The subject was “The Story of a Cocoa Bean, a Grain of Rice, a Bale of Wool, a Lump of Coal, or some other Empire Product.” Alastair R. Brown, of Waitaki Boys’ High School, Antony H. G. Roche, arjd Simon Shena. both of King’s School, Remuera, Auckland, were commended.
The entry for this year’s competition was a record. Altogether 534 essays were received. Entries came from the British Isles, Australia, Canada, Ceylon, East Africa, Malaya, New Zealand, Northern and Southern Rhodesia, South Africa, and West Africa. Eight schools in New Zealand submitted a total of 27 entrites.
