WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Little River.—-Preparations for the Canterbury Federation half-yearly meeting, to be held in the district in October, were made at the August meeting of the Little River Women’s Institute. Mrs Mould, who presided, gave an interesting account of the conference. A pioposal was made to hold a spring flower show next month. The guest speaker for the afternoon, Mr W. I. Humm, of Christchurch, gave an interesting talk on plant motherhood. Competitions resulted as follows: madeira cake: Mrs Grant 1, Mrs Topp 2, Mrs Wilkins 3- Best bloom: Mrs Lewthwaite 1, Mrs Topp 2, Mrs P. Ussher 3. Cluster: Mrs A. Patten 1, Mrs Topp 2, Mrs Reynish 3. Spike: Mrs A. Radford 1. Vase of fldwers: Mrs Topp 1, Mrs Grant 2. Largest flower: Mrs L. Lewth waite 1. Smallest flower; Mrs Jones 1. Mrs A. Radford 2, Mrs Grant 3. Hostesses were Mesdames J. Grant, J. Lewthwaite, B. Johns, A. Bruce, W. Bulman. Kaiapoi.—An enjoyable programme was given by the Glee Club. The Drama Club and Miss Heather Smith, to m. mbers of the Kaiapoi Women's Institute at a meeting recently. Mrs Barnard, who presided, Tead a letter from its sponsored child •n England. Mayfield.—To canvass the district for the United Nations’ appeal for children, collectors were appointed at the August meeting of the Mayfield Women’s Institute. Mrs R. Oakßy presided. Arrangements were made for a children's fancy dress party to be held at the end of the month, for which the Rev. J. G Mathews and Mr J. Isaacs would be askeo to organise games. Several invitations to women’s institute and Women's Division of Federated Farmers’ birthday parties were accepted. Members were urged to attend a meeting to discuss the question of a district nurse for Mayfield and surrounding districts. Mrs T. Taylor, the delegate to the confererice in Christchurch, gave an excellent report which covered the social and the business part of the conference. Mrs E. H. Davis gave a talk on the making of summer sweets, fruit preserving, and children's party arrangements. Mrs Davis also contributed elocutionary items. Shoulder sprays made by Mrs J. McCormick' were presented to Mesdames Tay’or and Davis The following are the results of the competitions:—small bloom: Mesdames T. Taylor 1, H. A. Scown 2. K. L. Moore 3 Large bloom: Mesdames G. J. Murdoch 1, C. Sewell 2, and K. L. Moore 3. Ginger cake: Mesdames S. Miller 1, D. H. Elms 2, C. Sewell 3. Three scones: Mesdames Sewell 1, Eims 2, S. Miller 3. A sales table in charge of Mrs R. Austin realised £4 8s 9d. The hostesses were Mesdames H. A. Scown and J. C. Winchester Springston.—One new member was welcomed by Mrs P. V. Bailey, who presided at the August meeting of the Springston Womens Institute. An interesting talk on the world food problem was given by Mr Smythe, of the Adult Education Department, who later answered many questions. Correspondence included an invitation to the Greenpark Women's Division of Federated Farmers’ birthday party. A full report on the conference was given by the delegate (Mrs R. Tyson).
