FINAL OF SENIOR COMPETITION

RUGBY FOOTBALL

DECISION MADE BY COMMITTEE DEPLETED TEAMS MAY PLAY OFF In the event of a draw in the senior competition after Marist and Technical Old Boys play in the final on Saturday, the two teams will play off on September 2 as a curtain-raiser to the Ranfurly Shield match between Canterbury and Wairarapa. This decision was made at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. Marist is at present one point behind Terhnical in the competition. The chairman of the competitions committee (Mr B. W. Blazey) said he wanted the position clarified. If, after Saturday, the two teams were equal, should they be asked to play off again in the final the following Saturday, September 2, when eaeh side would have lost players to the representative team? The committee could offer no solution to the problem, he said. It was suggested that the deciding match could be platyed on the following Wednesday, but Mr W. C. Dailey pointed out that not all players might be able to get off work for the match and so a team might be penalised through that reason. Mr J. O. Hattersley suggested that the two teams should be bracketed as joint winners if Marist won on Saturday, and that the depleted teams should play off the final week as a curtain-raiser to the shield match to decide the team to play for the Payne trophy. This suggestion was later put as a motion by Mr Dailey. Mr M. T. Gunderson moved as an amendment that if after Saturday the two teams were equal in points, they should play off for the final the following week. The amendment was carried. A letter was received from Mr J. L. Twohill, a referee of a third grade match between Marist and Richmond last Saturday, stating that he had ordered C. -Caley, a Richmond player, off the field for “persistent aggressive fighting tactics.” Caley was noticed to be in an aggressive mood before the game proceeded very far. Later, when play began to get willing, he had stopped the game and had warned both captains against the rough tactics. After this, when he saw Caley “shaping up” to another player, he had ordered him off the field, said the letter. It was decided to suspend Caley from playing until he appeared before the meeting next week. The president (Mr R. R. Masters) reported that the total gate at Lancaster Park last week was £53.
