DEFENCES OF WALVIS BAY

POSSIBLE USE OF PORT IN WAR CAPE TOWN, August 18. The port of Walvis Bay, in Southwest Africa, is to be put in an immediate state of defence in case of war. It will be developed to handle British ships should the Suez Canal be put out of action.

The harbour will be expanded, sixinch naval guns will be installed, and garrison troops,will be sent to handle ships of the Western Powers taking an alternative route round the African coast.
