U.S. SWIMMERS WIN RELAY RACE
WORLD RECORD SET TOKYO, August 7. The American 800 metre relay swimming team —Ronald Gore, Wayne Moor. Ford Konno and Jim McLane—established a new world record of Bmin 42.8se’c. The Japanese, Furuhashi, again gave proof of his outstanding ability by breaking ihe world record in the 800 metres freestyle. His time was 9min 42.8 sec. Ford Konno was second and John Marshall third. The United States team gained a smashing victory over the Japanese, winning a match by 46 points against Japan’s 17.
Nuffield Foundation Grants.— Mr Maurice Brown, secretary of the Nuffield Foundation Australian Advisory Committee announced that the trustees of the foundation will offer to the Australian graduates seven travelling fellowships to begin in 1951. Three will be in medicine and others in natural sciences (two), the humanities (one), and social sciences (one). The purpose of the fellowships is to enable men or women who are Australian graduates of outstanding ability to gain experience and training in Britain in their chosen fields, with a view to equipping themselves to take senior costs in research and teaching in Australia. The fellowships will normally be tenable for one year and their value will vary, but will in no case be less than £9OO a year.— Canberra, August 8.
