SUNDAY MATCHES
RUGBY FOOTBALL
CANTERBURY UNION’S ATTITUDE APPLICATION FOR USE OF RUGBY PARK An application from the Northern district of the South Island Railway Union for permission to use Rugby Park on Sunday, August 27, for the final South Island railway Rugby trial match, was received by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The letter said that the-match would have to be played on a Sunday, as most of the players were engaged in maintaining rajl services on Saturdays. Players would be selected from this match to represent the South Island against th® North Island railways. “It has never been the policy of this union to allow Sunday football,” said Mr J. N. Clarke, “and these are the only people the City Council allows to use council playing grounds on Sundays.” “I can’t see any objection to the boys having a game on this day,” said Mr A. H. Fanning. The president (Mr R. R. Masters) said that Rugby Park was situated in a builtup area and there would most likely be a crowd. It had never been the union’s policy to allow Sunday play, and he did not think th® union should start now. “I think they provide a good service for us, and it is up to us to do something for them,” said Mr Fanning. He was supported by Mr J. O. Hattersley. It was pointed out that English Park, which is used for association football, could be made suitable for the match if it was remarked, and it was decided to advise the railway union to apply to the City Council for the use of English Park on the date specified, or, failing that, the match l should be played on the Saturday morning. It was decided to make a grant of five guineas to the Y.M.C.A. and 20 guineas to the United Nations Appeal for Children. D. H. Herman was appointed captain of the Canterbury representative team to tour the South Island. The vice-captain is to be appointed by the managers. Mr Masters reported that the gate takings from Lancaster Park last Saturday were £BO.
