LEADERS CONFER IN FORMOSA
GENERAL MACARTHUR, MARSHAL CHIANG
(Rec. 10 p.m.) TOYKO, July 31. General MacArthur, accompanied by Admiral Arthur Struble, Commander of the United States 7th Fleet, and other senior American officers, flew to Formosa today for a military conference with Marshal Chian? Kai-shek and other Chinese Nationalist leaders.
DEFENCE TEAMS FOR FORMOSA
EXPERTS SENT FROM U.S. (Rec. 8 p.m.) HONG KONG, July 30. The United States to-day reinforced the. Navy, Army, and Air attaches on Formosa, the island stronghold of Marshal Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist Government. A nine-man team of Navy. Army, and Air Force officers, headed by Rear-Admiral Harry Jarrett, reached Taipe to-day by air from Washington, via Guam, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. The party included submarine experts end officers with long military experience on the Chinese mainland. Their arrival coincided with Nationalist intelligence reports of gathering Communist forces on the Chinese mainland opposite Formosa.
BRISK RECRUITING IN AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY, July 31. Although the conditions and the strength of an Australian ground force tor Korea have not yet been announced, recruiting continues fairly briskly in all main centres. At Victoria Barracks, Sydney. 272 men applied tor enlistment during the week-end making the total 709 since last Wednesday. The recruiting offices remained open yesterday and were kept busy with volunteers and inquiries. About two-thirds of the volunteers are former servicemen and the general standard is said to be high. The decision concerning Korea has improved recruiting tor the permanent forces, but most volunteers stipulate that they are interested only in active service and would not consider remaining in the Army or the Air Force on a peace-time basis. The Royal Australian Air Force has signed a number of men for the present minimum period of six years.
