GERHARD WILLNER

Sir, —Anyone not at Wednesday’s recital at the University would get a wrong impression from your critic’s report of what happened in the “Harrimerklavier” sonata. “Mr Winner’s attempt to play this long work was very plucky,” would suggest that it was quite beyond the artist and that he failed weakly. In fact. Mr Willner did play the sonata with great brilliance and beauty. In the first three movements he held his audience spellbound with his powerful handling of this beautiful work. In the fugue, after a slight break in which Mr Willner referred to the score, he concluded it showing complete mastery of the great technical complexity of the work Schnabel also, in a public recital, broke down in this same movement. Might I add that it seems a great pity that these fine recitals by the Willners are not broadcast?—Yours, etc., I. M. LOUGH. July 6. 1950.
