INSTALLATION OF TELEPHONES

RECORD FIGURE ACHIEVED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 2. In the 12 months ended March 31, the New Zealand Post Office provided telephones to 24.806 new subscribers, this record figure exceeding the previous year’s record of 21.067 by 3739. The total number of telephones in New Zealand is 345.539, the highest ever. These figures were given to-day by the Postmaster-General (Mr W. J. Broadloot) who said the achievement reflected credit on the Post Office departments concerned. However, in spite of that fine record of installation, he said, the waiting list at March 31 was 55.309. an increase of 6931 on the number waiting at March 31, 1949. The steadily increasing demand for telephones made i) difficult for the department to catch up.
