KAINGA SETTLERS’ TENANCY
CATCHMENT BOARD'S
DECISION
NO ENCOURAGEMENT FOR “ EXPENSIVE HOUSES ”
“These people should not be encouraged to build expensive and elaborate houses, because we wiil never kne-w when the land will be required for river protection work. We learnt a lesson about that last week.” said the chairman of the finance committee of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr H. B. Anderson), reporting to the board about a deputation from the Kainga settlers which waited on the committee. Water supply and drainage and security of tenure were the matters discussed at tne meeting. Mr Anderson explained that at present tenancy of the land in Kainga was on a year-to-year basis. He told tne deputation that the board would not object to any reasonable proposals for the water supply which were approved bv the chief engineer (Mr H. W. Harris), but that the present system of an annual tenancy must remain. The committee's action was approved. The committee had no recommendation to make concerning the Canterbury Centennial Association's invitation for the board to be represented by a float in the “100 Years of Progress” procession. “It is going to be a troublesome thing to put into commission/' said Mr Anderson. The board decided to take no action.
The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society's proposal that an area near White's bridge should be declared an area on which game may not be taken or killed was recommended for the approval of the board by the drainage and rivers control committee. The proposal had the support of the residents in the area, said the chairman of the committee (Mr Anderson).
“The Hal swell river has been cleaned twice in five months already and is at present being cleaned,” said Mr Anderson referring to the complaint from the Tai Tapu branch of Federated Farmers, about the state of the river. The board decided to write to the branch pointing out that exceptional weed growth had been evident during the last season.
