WEST INDIAN CRICKETERS

ENGLAND’S TEAM FOR FIRST TEST COMPTON’S FUTURE STILL UNDECIDED LONDON. Jurte 1. England's team for the first cricket test against the West Indies, beginning on June 8. will be chosen from the following:—

Norman Yardley (captain), W. J. Edrich, T. Bailey, R. Simpson, G. Doggart. L. Hutton, D Compton or H. Dollery, T. Evans, J. Laker, A. Bedser, W. Hollies, and R. Berry.

One surprise is the choice of the Cambridge captain. Doggart. He and the 24-year-old Lancashire left-arm bowler, Berry, are the only two who have not previously played in a test. Denis Compton entered a London clinic to-day for observation. A decision on whether an operation will be performed on his knee will probably be made to-morrow.

The English team includes five amateurs. The average age of the 13 named is 30.

England to-day beat The Rest in the test trial at Bradford by an innings and 89 runs. The wicket was faster than yesterday, but it still took spin. In the eight and a quarter hours that the match lasted 30 wickets fell for 369 runs. Scores: The Rest, first innings, 27; second innings. 113 (Spooner 22, E. Bedser 30; A. Bedser two for 22. Laker two for 44. Hollies six for 28). England, first innings, 299.
