POTATO GROWING

Sir, —At to-day’s meeting of potato growers in Christchurch I asked Mr T. L. Hayman, M.P.. a question about the possibility. of getting an increased price for potatoes to compensate for increased costs as a result of the abolition of subsidies. He seemed to think that I was, trying to score a political point from him. If anyone was trying to put him on the spot it was not I. It could only have been his conscience. The matter is quite serious.’ Railage to Lyttelton and the grower’s cost of living are already up. Wages are going up, and as the increases will certainly be made retrospective, they will affect a large part of this year’s harvesting costs. I estimate that the grower will need an extra £1 a ton to keep himself on an even keel.—Yours, etc., C. T. WILLIAMS. May 30. 1950.
