CUSTOMS RETURNS
FIGURES FOR MAY Revenue collected by the Customs Department' in Christchurch in May was £530.153, an increase of £107.616 on collections in’ May of last year.
The figures for May. 1950. with those for May, 1949, in parenthesis, are: customs and excise. £278,822 (£249.418'; petrol tax, £35.620 (£32,546); tyres, £335 (£28); sales tax. £206,012 (£131.729); light dues, £922 (£990); export levy, hides. £8337 (£8652): miscellaneous, £lO5 (£175); totals. £530.153 (£422,537).
The figures for the two months’ period ended yesterday, with those for the corresponding period last year in parenthesis, are as follows: customs and excise, £518.555 (£432.841); petrol tax. £67.984 (£32.546); tyres. £590 (£28); sales tax, £295,041 (£252.536); light dues, £l44* (£1702); export levy, hides, £11.052 (£8652); miscellaneous, £155 (£250); totals, £895,425 (£758,845).
AUCKLAND Revenue collected by the Customs Department at Auckland during May totalled £1,261.639, against £915,131 in the corresponding month of last year. Main items, with corresponding figures for 1949 in parenthesis, were:—customs. £652.565 (£483,492); petrol tax. £116.116 (£99.580); tyre duty. £716 (£375); sales tax. £491.642 (£33i,684). Totals. £1.261.639 (£915,131). DUNEDIN Customs revenue received in Dunedin during May showed the considerable increase of £23,911 over that received during the corresponding period last year. Sales tax returns showed a similar increase. Figures for May. 1950. with those for the corresponding period last year in parenthesis, were:—Customs. £145,768 (£121.855): sales tax. £133,300 (£86.572); 1 petrol. £19.934 (£17,3’6); tyres. £302 (£44). Total: £299,302 (£225.786).
