ELECTRICITY IN BRITAIN
NEW TYPE OF POWER CABLES (Rec. 8.20 p.m.) LONDON. May 30. “British scientists have discovered how to double Britain’s electricity supply by a new method of transmission — using power cables filled with gas instead of ordinary, solid conductor material,” says the “Daily Herald.” “In this way Britain’s grid could transmit 275.000 volts instead of the present 132,000 and ‘bring electricity to every home, farm, and factory, and meet any demand.’ ” The “Daily Herald” says that a 40mile stretch of the new grid will be built in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire within a year at a cost of £25,000,000 sterling.
