YOUTH RALLY IN EAST BERLIN

Western Precautions Prove Effective

COMMENT BY U.S. COMMANDANT

(Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, May 30. Major-General Maxwell D. Taylor, the United States Commandant in Berlin, said last night that the Western Allies’ determination to hold Western Berlin had caused the Communists to abandon their announced plan to invade the city’s Western sector during the Whitsun week-end. General Taylor was commenting on the week-end rally of 500,000 Communist youths, which ended without incident.

“There was no putsch because there was no giving in at any place ulong our line,” General Taylor said. However, Western Berlin’s danger was not yet over, and the position called for a wider application of “unyielding resistance” to the Communists.

Professor Ernst Reuter, Lord Mayor of Western Berlin, said: “The Communist youth undoubtedly planned to storm Western Berlin, but our firm attitude and the fact that the Allies stood by us led them to change their plans.” The Western Berlin police said last night that 38 members of the East Berlin police force and 25 members of the Communist Youth Movement had sought refuge in the Western sector of Berlin since the beginning of the Communist youth rally.
