IRRIGATION IN CANTERBURY

FARMERS SHOWING INTEREST

Much interest in irrigation is being shown by settlers outside the present schemes, reported Mr J. O. Riddell (assistant district engineer of the Ministry of Works) yesterday. Groups in the Rakaia-Dorie district and the Dromorc, Lauriston and Barrhill areas were canvassing land owners for support of an irrigation scheme. In the light areas near the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers, the Canterbury Progress League was sponsoring another canvass.

The activities are a sequel to a recent announcement by the Minister of Works (Mr W. S. Goosman) that irrigation schemes would not be continued until he obtained concrete evidence that the schemes would be supported. The area of land proposed to be irrigated under the three schemes is upwards of 400,000 acres. The Ashbur-ton-Lyndhurst scheme, operating for several years, covers 46,000 acres and only half of the 80.000 acres in the Mayfield-Hinds district have been irrigated. Progress on the scheme is slow as plant and men have been diverted to hvdfo-electrio construction works. Before taking un his present appointment. Mr Riddell was irrigation engineer for Canterbury.
