THEFT OF GOODS FROM SHOPS

CHIROPODIST SENTENCED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. May 30. For stealing goods from shops. William Richard de Courtnaye Ven-ning-Thomas. aged 50, a chiropodist, was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The police said the accused had made a statement admitting thef f s over a period of four years of goods valued at between £3OO and £4OO. He had been unemployed because of ill-health and had used the money from the sale of the stolen goods to buy food and clothing for his four children, who were under 16 years of age. The accused, who had previously been in trouble, seemed to have become a drug addict. The Magistrate (Mr M. C. Astley. S.M.) told Venning-Thomas that he needed detention and medical attention. An examination by a psychiatrist was ordered.
