TROTTING

FIELD SELECTED After th;ee qualifying races had been held on the Ashburton course yesterday, the commiteee of the Ashburton Trotiing Club selected the following horses to rat e in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes on the second day of the winter meeting next Monday:—Pyrites, Safeguard, First Victory. Highland Light. Dealer’s Choice Adorian, Flagship, Taradale, Esquire. Radiant N.ght. Kapeen, Wyvern. Moreto, ard Prince Charming. Winners in Johnny Globe and Vivanti weie not requited to pa r ade in the trials. They were automatically in the field under the special conditions for the race. First Victory created a good impression when he won the first trial in 3min 28 2-ssec. after pacing the last four furlongs in ’min 3 3-ssec. Adorian took the lead at the start, and when the field settled down he was followed by Dealer’s Choice. B’ue Pietro. Safeguard, Lady French, Highland Light, Pyrites, and First Victory. Blue Pietro improved his position to follow Adorian, and with half a mile to go these two were followed bv Deale ’s Cho'ce, Highland Light. Safeguard. Pyrites. First Victory, and Lady French. First Victory made a last run approaching the entrance to the straight, and he carried on to win nicely by half a length frbm Adori n Then came Highland Light. Safegua d. Pyrites, and Dealer’s Choice, which finished close together. First Victory, which was sold when he was a few months old by M. Holmes to the late Mr R. H. Kennedy, is a handsome individual. By I.ight Brigade, he is out of Erehom, which left a winner in Likely to Grattan Loyal. Erehom. which was bred by B. Grice, is by Travis Axv.orthy from Lady Rey, by Rey de Oro from Lady Pointer, by Logan Pointer from Lady Derby, by Roth child from Norice. First Victory bears the stamp of quality. He should eventually develop into a good winner. Adorirn. the runner-up to Vivanti in the Juvenile Handicap at Addington la t Saturday, appeared to be do ng his best at the finish. A wel -bred son of Springfield Globe and Coquette, he appears to have bright prospects. Mr T. Ferguson’s Highland Light appears to be improving rapidly under A. Murdoch’s guidance at Hornby. On breeding. Highland Light, which is by Light Brigade from a winner in Nola Scott, should win races when she settles down to ’ace solidly. M r W. T Lowe’s Safeguard, which was a place-getter at Oamaru recently, gave further proof of her ability when she finished close up after having to change her course in order to get a clear run in the straight. , An Easy Win Esquire, a good performer at matinee meetings earlier in the year, recorded the fastest time of the day when he won the second heat by two lengths from Radiant Night in 3m in 24sec. Esquire paced his last half-mile in Imin 4 l-ssec. Radiant Night was the first to show out, and at the end of the first furlong he was followed by Taradale, Kapeen. Flagship, and Esquire, with gaps to Lady Balfour, Courser, and Spring Princess, which broke at the start.

Flagship broke in the early stages, but he struck his gait quickly, and he raced up to follow Radiant Night. With half a mile to go. these two were followed by Taradale. Kapeen. and Esquire. Once the straight was reached, Esquire quickly improved his position, and although he did not keep a straight course, he was not tre-üb'ed to win by two lengths from Radiant Niehl, which beat Taradale bv half a length. Then came Kapeen. which did not finish on as expected, and Flagship. which was obviously feeling the strain at the finish. A Josedale Dictator gelding, Esquire is out of Sea Treasure, by Wrack from Honour Bound, the dam of a winner in Silverlipht. Rad ant Night, which is trained at Templeton by J. B. Pringle for Messrs V. Caldwell and R. J. Marshall, is a colt by Radiant Walla from Loyal Charm, by Grattan Loyal from a winner in Belinda, which left winner in Courier to Rey de Oro Taradale, which will be bracketed with Safeguard in the Sapling Stakes, is a likely type. A U Scott gelding. Taradale is out of Belle Lorimer, which is also the dam of Belle Header, Gloxania. Flame. Sprinetide. and Quota. On the form he has shown. Taradale appears to have more abilitv than most of his age. Related to Winners Prince Charming, a brother to Gay Knight, and a half-brother to other winners in Terry O’Shea and Troubadour, was not troubled to win the third heat in 3min 29s< • after pacing the last four furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec. Irish Orator and Red Sable broke at the start. Prince Charming began quickly to lead at the end of the first furlong from Wyvern. Credit Chief, and Moreto. Prince Charming was always going easily, and he appeared to have something in reserve, as he finished a length and a half clear of Wyvern, which gave a solid display. Then came Moreto. which finished 15 lengths clear of Credit Chief. By Springfield Globe, Prince Charming, which is a well-developed colt, is out of a fine performer in Grace McElwyn. which took a record of 2min 41 2-ssec. On this display, he should win races for Mr E. D. Johnston, for whom he is trained at Templeton by C. R. Berkett. Wyvern, which gave an encouraging performance to finish fifth in the Juvenile Handicap at Addington last Saturday, pleased by her effort. A filly by Dillon Hall from More Expense. Wyvern races in the interests of J. Slack, who trains her at Addington Vivanti. a winner at her last three starts, will probably be backed down to a short price in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes. On form, she should win the first prize for Mr W. L. Parkinson. Most opposition to her may come from Johnny Globe First Victory, and Esquire. Broke Up Merry Man, the winner of two races earlier in the season for Mr K. Langford, never appealed ?s a possibility after breaking m the early stages of the Second Hsmbletonian Handicap at Addington on Saturday At New Brighton Mary Wootton, which was trained for her races last season by G. B. Noble, is now in A. J. Motz’s team at New Brighton. A three-year-old filly. Mary Wootton, which is owned by Mr R. A. McKenzie. is by Springfield Globe from Pansienne. Deserves a Win Air Mail brought her record to six seconds. a third, and a fourth in her 14 starts this season when she finished a head behind Tutta Bella in the Fendalton Haifcii“P , at 1116 Canterbury Park Trotting Club s meeting at Addington on Saturday. A six-year-old daughter of Dillon Hall and Auburn Sun, Air Mail may gain a win for Mr A. Simpson, for whom she is trained by W. R. Butt, before the season closes. By Black Globe Mark et, which is an acceptor in the Allenton Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by Black Globe from Home, a Native King mare, which > cf £ two winners at the pacing gait in Fabric Silk and Maori Home. Finished Fast Prince Hall, the outsider of the field in F ’ nal Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington on Saturday, sustained a strong finishing run over the last half m ile to finish third after having nine horses in front of him with six furlongs to go. A son of Dillon Hall and Chatelaine, Prince Hall has raced well this season to £ ain _ a ' vin and eight minor placings for Mr F. Ruck. Showed Much Ability If C. K. Yeatman could have found an opening for Dual Flight at a critical stage of the race, he might have been placed in the Juvenile Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. A son of Red Flight and Orient Girl, Dual Flight has shown much ability in his races. May Improve Driven by G. McKendry, Expensive gave a pleasing performance in the Ellesmere Handicap at Addington on Saturday. A son of Sandydale and Little Claire, Expensive, which is now trained at Oamaru by W. Robertson for Mr J. Johnstone. would need to show little improvement to win a race.
