ACCIDENTS ON FARMS
Sir, —In the last nine years there have beep 256 fatal accidents' on New Zealand farms, the majority being tractor accidents. It is remarkable and significant that almost invariably these have occurred late in the day, many of them after 5 p.m., when the tractordriver had already had a day’s work behind him. It has been said that it farmers had to pay overtime wages, work would cease at 5 p.m. on weekdays, and at noon on Saturdays. While not subscribing fully to that sentiment, I do say that with modern machinery and implements, there is something wrong with the man who normally requires more than eight hours in the paddocks to do a day's work; but when extra work is absolutely necessary, tractor-drivers should have a spell of at least half an hour off the tractor, with refreshments, after each 4-hour ! shift. That is only plain common sense.—Yours, etc., D. ROBERTSON. Rakaia, May 27. 1950.
