“The present position is very critical indeed. Greatly increased support from the citizens of Christchurch will be necessary to enable the work to be carried on.” said Mr L. D. Cotterill. who presided yesterday at the annual meeting of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. Mr Cotterill said that the running of “Fitzroy” as a short-term convalescent home would not throw any added burden on to the ordinary revenue account. It was intended to make the home self-sup-porting. Mesdames M. Wenwick and B. Tynham. both of whom are members of the British War Wives' Club in Christchurch. who have been revisiting England, returned to Christchurch last week. An appeal for documents, diaries, manuscripts or anecdotes, and personal reminiscences relating to the early medical history of Canterbury was made yesterday by the president of the Canterbury branch of the British Medical Association (Dr. F. O Bennett) when he spoke at the annual meeting of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association. The work of converting “Fitzroy,” the former home of Mr and Mrs R. E McDougall, into a short-term convalescent home is progressing, and it is hoped that it will be ready to accommodate patients towards the end of the year. This was reported at the annual meeting of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association yesterday. “Fitzroy” was given to the association last year by Mrs McDougall and her daughters. Balloons and streamers decorated the Mayfair Lounge on Friday evening when about .180 guests were entertained at the fourth annual ball of the British War Wives' Club The committee responsible for the success of the gathering were the president (Mrs J. P. Walton). Mesdames Perry. J. Garton. B. Tweedside, W. Bigg. Benjie. and Hurd. On behalf of the North Canterbury Speech Therapy Association, the president (Mr A. O. Sandelin) presented an audiometer to the senior speech therapist at the Christchurch Speech Clinic (Miss G. M. Gane) last evening. The i istrument will be used at the clinic for the assessment of the children's hearing. The ninety-fifth birthday of Mrs l Clara Richards, of Avondale. Auck- I land, was celebrated recently at tho I home of one of her daughters. Mrs A Shepherd. Manukau road. Epsom. Mrs Richards, who is one of Auckland's oldest pioneers, was born in Dome Valley and has lived in the Auckland province all her life. She has a [ family of two sons and .seven daughters. all of whom attended the reunion I with the exception of Mrs C. Taylor, who is at present in England.
