AVONSIDE HIGH SCHOOL

NEW UNIFORM TO BE INTRODUCED A new and distinctive uniform will be introduced at the Avonside Girls’ High School in 1951. “Since the school came of age in February. 1949. and was placed under the control of its own board of managers, the staff, with the board’s knowledge and approval, nas been giving consideration to plans :oi a distinctive Avonside Girls’ High School uniform. ’ says a statement issued yesterday by the principal (Miss V. L. Townsend). “After ascertaining carefuily that any changes would reduce, rather than increase. the cost of a school outfit and that the retail firms could ensure an adequate supply of all requirements by February. 1951, it. has been decided to effect the change-over for all 1951 entrants. “The new uniform consists of a brown outfit with a cream slub linen > blouse in shirt pattern, which can be buttoned up for cold months, open for summer. The optional summer uniform will consist of the above-men-tioned type of blouse with a shortsleeve and a brown skirt cut to a specially designed style. The lie is to be plain lime green, and the hatband has a narrow line of the same green running through the centre of a band of tussore-fawn which stands on a background of brown. The embroidered badge will be replaced by a metal one, in which the lines of the new school crest stand out in the natural metal on a background of lime-green enamel. The hat for winter will be a brown felt, for summer an off-white panama. Brown lace-up shoes will be worn with fawn lisle stockings in the winter, and cream sockcttes in the summer. “The firms which have undertaken to supply the school’s requirements have been most, co-operative and helpful, and have given an assurance that they will all supply standard uniform requirements." the statement continues. “Their stocks are on order and will come to hand in the course of the next six months. The new ties and hatbands should arrive from England by the end of the year. These will be supplied by the shops only on receipt of an order signed by the principal, and the new badge will be on sale at the school at the commencement of the new school year. “For those who wish to make the summer blouse and skirt themselves, diagrams, with full notes, have been prepared; these will be supplied by the school to applicants for entry, together with the order form ‘or tie and hatband and the list of items comprising the new uniform.” •
