ROADS AFFECTED BY FLOODS

DETOURS NECESSARY ON WEST COAST

Although the Lewis Pass road was open to Reef ton it was not possible to reach either Greymouth or Westport from Reefton. said the chief patrol officer of the Automobile As-

sociation (Canterbury) (Mr L. D. Pickles) last evening. On the road to Greymouth he said there were slips and washouts on a section at Mawheraiti. and on the road to Inangahua and Westport a span of the Waituhu bridge had disappeared.

Mr Pickles said that motorists going to Westport or Greymouth should take the Lewis Pass road to the Springs Junction, where they should join the Shenandoah road to Sullivan's Bridge. Here they should turn loft to Inangahua and Westport. From Westport Greymouth can be reached bv the coast road —a total trip of about 300 miles from Christchurch.

Mr Pickles said that the Buller Gorge was very rough and motorists were being assisted by bulldozers. The Shenandoah road was in a similar state. The road from Greymouth to the Franz Josef glacier was open.

The Arthur’s Pass-Otira road would be out of use for several days, said Mr Pickles. He said there was some water over the Main North road north of the Waimakariri bridge, but it was not expected to interfere with traffic.
