SOUTH RAIL TRAFFIC RESUMED

APPROACH TO RAKAIA BRIDGE REPAIRED

The northern approach to the Rakaia railway bridge, which was washed out by flood waters on Friday night, had been patched sufficiently to allow through rail traffic to be resumed by the middle of Saturday afternoon. The first train across after the wash-out was the through goods train from Dunedin, which passed across the bridge between 4 and 5 p.m. Passengers from the steamer express ; bn Saturday morning were taken by a fleet of Railway Road Service and Christchurch Tramway Board buses to Rakaia, where they transhipped to the same carriages that had formed the midnight express from the south. The south express on Saturday was only half an hour late in arriving at Oamaru. The fleet of buses was used to bring passengers on the midnight express to Christchurch. The north express was able to proceed over the bridge late on Saturday afternoon at reduced speed.
