GALCADOR WINS DERBY

LONDON, May 27. The Derby Stakes, run over a mile and a half at Epsom to-day, resulted:— GALCADOR (Djebel—Pharya) 9-0 W. R. ("Togo”) Johnstone 1 Prince Simon (Princequillo—Dancing Dora) 9-0 W. Carr 2 Double Eclipse (Hyperion—Doubleton) 9-0 .. E. Smith 3
Head; four lengths. Twenty-five started. Betting: Galcador 100/9, Prince Simon (favourite) 2/1, Double Eclipse 40/1. Princp Simon led nearly all the way but was caught in the last 100 yards, and in a fine race, with Galcador, was beaten on the post by a head. This gave Johnstone his second Derby win in three years.
From a good start, Pewter Platter and Prince Simon led for the first two furlongs, with Galcador in the centre of the field. Prince Simon was in front at the first turn, well clear of Pewter Platter, Persia, and TAdmiral. Prince Simon, led round Tattenham corner two lengths clear of Galcador, which was then fourth. Galcador challenged a furlong from the post and got his head m front with 100 yards to go. The day opened bleakly with heavy rain, and early morning picnickers, who usually attended to see the horses at exercise, were absent. Nor were there any overnight camping parties. The weather improved during the morning, and a great rush began. Among the coaches were hundreds from Scotland, Wales, and the North of England. By mid-morning crowds had lined the rails 10 deep all along the straight. The King and Queen, with Queen Marv, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, arrived at noon.
