His Excellency Sir Bernard Freyberg and Lady Freyberg have consented to attend a garden party to be given at Deans Bush in December, by the Canterbury Pilgrims’ and Early Settlers’ Association.

Mr and Mrs R. W. Neale (Cambridge terrace), who left Christchurch in October for Britain and Europe, are now in America on their homeward journey. They are expected in Christchurch about July 21.

Miss Zena Johnson will leave Christchurch on July 11 for London, where she will study at the Royal Academy of Music. On Saturday night at a meeting of the Christchurch Cultural Society, where Miss Johnson was solo pianist Professor G. Jobberns (president of the society), on behalf of members, wished her good fortune.

Mrs Margaret Dorothy Law has completed a task which has taken her seven years editing the new edition of Chambers’ Encyclopaedia, now published in 15 volumes by George Newnes. The 15 volumes contain 14,500,000 words. The only member of Mrs Law’s family to contribute is George, aged 21, an undergraduate ot Clare College, Cambridge, who wrote a few hundred words on fagging. “It has been my policy to get contributors of practical experience. So as George was just leaving Westminster School. I turned to him,” said Mrs Law. Mrs Law’s husband was formerly a Treasury official.

Miss Audrey Orbell (Christchurch) left Auckland by air on Saturday for England to take up a Nuffield Fellowship through the World Health Organisation. With a team of other nurses, she will tour England, Denmark and Sweden, studying the work of nurses in hospitals and of health visiting nurses.

Mrs A. F. Morley, wife of the De-puty-High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, who recently arrived in Wellington, is a good linguist. She is Austrian-born and was at school in France and Switzerland. During the war she worked for four years in the censor’s department and last year she translated a biography of Bismarck for a London firm. An excellent concert organised by Mesdames S. Maddren and H. Ford in aid of the Sydenham Youth Centre was held in the new Sunday School Hall. Brougham street. A substantial sum was realised for the benefit of the centre. Connor, president of the Spreydcn Rod Cross, presented Mrs Ede with a posy hydrangea basket in appreciation of her kindness in lending her home for the April meeting. Mrs Tanner was the guest speaker. She described her travels in England. France and Spain and showed views of places she had visited. A number of members announced their decision to take the V.A.D. course for sick-room nursing. Future meetings wore to be held in the Union Methodist Schoolroom. Letters were read from Mrs Malaise, whose daughter is being sponsored by the v branch, thanking members for parcels received. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of magazines for the Cashmere Sanatorium from Mesdames Martin, Reed, A. Bunz, and George Aitken. A “shop on wheels” is to be opened in th? Wellington Hospital by the Wellington centre of the New Zealand Red Cross.
