SIXTH ROUND PLAYED SYDENHAM NOW LEADING Beating Technical by 3 goals to 1, Sydenham gained the lead in the Canterbury Hockey Association’s competition on Saturday. Sydenham has a lead of half a point over Selwyn and Technical. In a hard, fast game Selwyn beat Woolston, and Trinity beat Varsity. Results;— Sydenham 3, Technical L Selwyn 2, Woolston 1. Trinity 1, University 0. Competition points at the end of the sixth round are:—Sydenham 4J. Selwyn 4. Technical 4, Trinity 2J, University 2j, Woolston 0. SYDENHAM v. TECHNICAL With A. Roberts unable to attend because of the floods on the Nortn road Technical was disorganised. Although L. Dixey played a sterling game in Roberts's elace, A. Goodman, who substituted lor •ixey at right half, was not up to senior standard and allowed N. Brownlie too much scope. J. Grimley had an off day and the brunt of the forward play fell to the Dale brothers and R. Leney. all of whom played well. In addition to L. Dixey, who played a good game, M. Elliott and P. Kissel 1 were very sound in defence of Technical s circle. Dixey's tackling was of a very high standard, and his fielding and intercepting very fine. Elliott continues to play consistently well and will be very unlucky to miss representative honours this year. Sydenham was fully extended and all players were up to the usual standard. Brownlie made some useful runs on the left, but the halves hit too hard in the passes to the right. The pick of the front rankers- was I. Smith, who played with great ball control and judgment, and his back tackling was a help to the halves. Poor direction in his goaling shots was his only weakness. He was inclined to pull his shots to leg too much. W. Morris was off form in the early part of the game but improved later. In goal Rhind gave a great exhibition and saved his side repeatedly. Goals were scored for Sydenham by Cumberpatch (2) and Brownlie. A penalty bully enabled C. Dale to register Technical’s only goal. The final score was Sydenham 3. Technical 1. Umpires: Messrs H. A. Ostler and C. Gutry. TRINITY v. UNIVERSITY’ In a game that produced little firstclass combination or passing. Trinity was lucky to beat University by 1 goal to 0. E. Thomas in the forwards and M. Hayward at centre half s.tood out in t.ie Trinity team, which lacked position and accurate fielding. Neither wing forwards were up to the usual standard and Allen and Glentworth showed little of the speedy solo moves that usually characterise their play. At centre half M. Hayward showed plenty of promise, although he is inclined to go up too far at limes. Mitchell was the better of the two backs and played sound defence. D. Adcock and M. Chapple stood out in the University forwards, who did not show their usual cohesion and short passing combination. C. V. Walter and J. Mann worked well in the halves. Walter playing particularly well. D. Reid and R. Armstrong work well together in the back division and P. Froome in goal is rapidly improving. The only goal scored came from the third of a series of penalty corners which ended in a short melee in front of University's goal. Glentworth finally netted the goal. Umpires: Messrs W. Grammer and H. Teague. SELWYN v. WOOLSTON Woolston gave a vastly improved display of teamwork in the match with Selwyn, which won a close game by a splendid last-minute goal by J. Reece. Much of the hard and aimless hitting of Woolston's earlier matches was eliminated, and as a consequence the play flowed evenly. D. Kimm made a success of his position at centre half, intercepting cleverly and sending up well-placed, intelligent passes. J. H. Hannah and J. Deakins played well in the forwards, as did E. Malone until he was hurt. A. Purver, a newcomer to inside left, did well in his first game. L. Jones gave a better showing. R. Fairbrother had a quick eye and splendid recovery at back, but his clearing hits and positional play were very poor. Selwyn included a new player. H. Atkinson, in the forward line, and he shaped well. N. Herron worked tirelessly and well at inside left. A. McOscar did well at left half. J. Down played steadily at right back. He is a more reliabc typo than M. Down, whose brilliance is sometimes dimmed by misses and overmuch dribbling.

Woolston took the first score when Hannah’s brilliant run pierced the defence and Malone was up to score off the goalie’s pads. A similar move by Herron, finished off by Duncan, brought Selwyn level. The game was close thereafter with both sides missing at the crucial moment, until Reece, with only minutes left, gave Selwyn the win with a splendid angle shot from the left. The umpires were Messrs C. Gutry and K. Hamilton. LOWER GRADES Senior Reserve -Selwyn 2. Sydenham 2; High School uld Boys 2, Harewood 1; Trinity 5, West .0.8. 1; Technical 4. University 2.
