DR. EVATT AND MR LIE

BITTER CRITICISM IN AUSTRALIAN HOUSE LIBERAL M.P.’S CHARGES CANBERRA. May 26. Speaking last night in the Federal House of Representatives. Mr William Wentworth (Liberal) bitterly criticised ‘be Secretary-General of the United Nations (Mr Trygve Lie) and Dr H V. Evatt. formerly Australian Minister of External Affairs and a former President of the United Nations General Assembly. Mr Wentworth said that Mr Lie had returned from his conference with Mr Stalin after putting forward “an appeasement-to-Russia plan, in which there was no mention of the eliminaRussian veto or of plans within the United Nations to outveto the Russian veto.” Mr Lie had received his post as Secretary-General with Russian approval. “Mr Lie was appointed under Russian auspices, and in the past has lived up to the Russian plans.” continued Mr Wentworth. “I think we nave to consider whether he may be under Soviet domination Mr Lie was also supported by the honourable and ineffable member for Barton (Dr. Evatt).” Alleging that Dr. Evatt was “one of the men responsible for the certainty or almost-certainty of a third world war.” Mr Wentworth said that, acting from the motive of vanity. Dr. Evatt had played a major part in the introduction of the cold war. and that his actions as President of the United Nations when war could have been avoided, had made war very likely. Dr. Evatt angrily defended himself and Mr Lie. and claimed that Mr Wentworth's “greatest.ambition is that there will be war against Russia.” Later. Mr Wentworth objected to this statement, but could not be heard through Labour interjections. When the House adjourned, several Government members, including Mr Paul Hasluck (Liberal) hurried across the chamber to tell Dr. Evatt that they had no part in the attack.
