WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Mount Pleasant.—Final arrangements for a birthday party to be held m Christchurch at the end of next month were made at the May meeting of the Mount Pleasant Women’s Institute. Mrs J. Me Gregor Smith, who presided, welcomed three new members to the gathering. The agenda for the Dominion conference to be held in July was read by the secretary (Mrs K. Cropp), and a comprehensive report on the annual Canterbury Federation meeting was given by the delegate (Mrs J. W. Dawrant). A knitting derby held during the afternoon resulted in Mrs Inwood gaining first place, with Mrs Cowan second. Monthly competitions resulted as follows:—best bloom: Mrs C. Ilarbut Six cakes: Mrs Radcliffe 1. Mrs Park 2. Apron: Mrs Dines. Christchurch Centre.—Plans for the entertainment circle to visit the Jubilee Home and to provide each patient with a pair of bed socks, made by members of the centre, were made at the May meeting of the Christchurch centre of Women’s Institutes. Mrs Anderson presided To commemorate “mother’s day, members of the entertainment circle gave many enjoyable items during the afternoon. Competitions for the month resulted as follows:—white bloom: Mesdames Candy, Glover, and Davidson. Darned sock: Mesdames Barrow and Beck. Plain scones: Mesdames Barrow, Kirk, and R. Smith.

Canterbury Federation.—A recommendation from Dominion headquarters that members support country girls’ clubs was read at an extraordinary meeting of the executive committee ot the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes. Mrs H. Prebble, who presided, was appointed delegate to the conference in July. The committee decided to support an appeal that all rice be sent to famine areas overseas. The following were appointed a sub-committee for the office in Cashel street:—Mesdames Morten. Judd. Candy, and Miss Lewton. It was decided to help with the Y.W.C.A. street collection in June.
