SECRETARY ASKED TO RESIGN MOVE BY TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26. The Wellington branch of the New Zealand Tramway Employees’ Union has called on its secretary, Mr P. A. Hansen, to relinquish immediately the position of secretary of the Trade Union Congress. Mr Hansen, who is both the Wellington branch and /the national secretary of the Tramway Employees’ Union, accepted the Trade Union Congress secretaryship when that organisation was formed after the breakaway from the Federation of Labour last month. Tramway Employees’ Union delegates were among those who took part in the breakaway move.

Unofficial reports of the Wellington branch meetings held on Wednesday, at which a resolution asking for Mr Hansen’s withdrawal from office in the the Trade Union Congress was carried by a two-to-one majority, were confirmed to-day by the branch president. Mr G. N. Amos.

Mr Hansen said to-day that it had been decided to give no press publicity to those meetings and he had nothing to say.

Mr Amos said to-day that the undertaking of no press publicity did not apply to himself or Mr Hansen. The federation is to be approached with a request .that it endeavours to hold discussions to restore unity to industrial labour ranks, according to another resolution carried at the meetings. Melville, secretary of the New Zealand Drivers’ Federation, has been appointed secretary of the New Zealand Trade Union Congress, to succeed Mr P. A. Hansen, who has resigned. RUBBER WORKERS SUPPORT FEDERATION (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 26. Rubber workers employed by the Reid Rubber Mills, Auckland, decided by a substantial majority in a ballot to-day to stay with the New Zealand Federation of Labour. There was an attendance of 244 at a pre-work meeting.
