CIVIC MUSIC COUNCIL

COMMUNITY CHOIRS’ FESTIVAL

Preparations for the community choirs’ festival to be held towards the end of October this year were completed at a meeting of the Christchurch Civic Music Council executive last evening. Four choirs associated with industries or small communities will take part ill the festival.

The choirs which will be taking part are the Addington Workshops Choir (conductor. Mr J. A. Ritchie), Hays, Ltd. Choir (conductor, Mr Clifton Cook). Risingholme Community Choir (conductor. Mr Albert N. Wilson). and the South Brighton Choral Society (conductor, Mr G. B. Couch). A report of the contacts which have been made with other musical organis-

ations in the other main centres was presented. A music council had been established in Auckland, and was doing work similar to that done by the Christchurch council. The council had had a visit from its president (Mr Julius Hogben), who had discussed the possibility of periodical conferences of representatives of .the four main centres concerned to discuss questions of procedure, policy, the engagement of artists, the pooling of experiences and the general development of the councils.

A council had just been formed in Dunedin, and the Royal Wellington Choral Union had expressed full agreement with the proposals, it was reported.
