MUSIC DURING CENTENARY

ASSOCIATION’S PLANS

Arrangements were well in hand for the provincial towns’ music festival to be held in September, it was reported at a meeting of the music committee of the Canterbury Centennial Association last evening. At this festival an original cantata, composed and conducted by Mr John Ritchie, will be sung by the combined choirs of Tcmttka. Ashburton, Leeston, Methven, Oxford. Rangiora. and South Brighton. It is entitled “Then Laugheth the Year.” Plans were also well ahead for an old-time concert on the night of December 18. it was reported. At this concert the committee hoped that it would be possible to recapture the spirit of the musical entertainment of 100 years ago. The committee had also made considerable progress towards arranging a musical exhibition of old instruments in May next year, it was stated, and would be grateful to receive information of the whereabouts of old instruments. The arrangements for the music week in March, 1951, are well advanced. Six choral societies in Christchurch will be collaborating with the National Symphony Orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr Michael Bowles, in concerts in the King Edward Barracks. The Christchurch Operatic Society reported that, it would be presenting the musical comedy “Chu Chin Chow” in October tbis year.
