(Kec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK. Mav 25 New York's latest motor vehicle*'tunnel. costing 80.000,000 dollars wa«= opened to-day after 10 years’ ’ work. The tunnel, which runs under the East river, connects the financial and commercial district of New York City with Brooklyn, on Long Island The tunnel, which is 9117 feet long is known as the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel It consists of twin tubes, each with two traffic lanes. The longest underwater traffic link in the United States, it is the second road tunnel under the East river. Two other road tunnels connect Manhattan with New Jersey. Manhattan’s motor traffic is also carried by several bridges. Ten million toll-paying vehicles are expected to use the Brooklyn Battery Tun-1 nel each year. |
