IMPORT LICENCES
Sir, —Unable to be present in Christchurch on May 25, I am hoping that someone at this meeting will invite Mr Nash to explain why, in his dying moments as Minister of Finance, between December 1 and December 13 last, he found it necessary to approve of import licences of about £2,000,000, greatly increasing, in cases doubling, applications, to the amazement of many importers concerned. There is of course only one answer: “to embarrass the incoming Minister of Finance, and more or less put him in the cart for sterling funds’’—a backhanded. political, juggle. When people complain of necessary measures being taken to-day, they should blame Mr Nash, not Mr Holland.—Yours, etc., NATIONAL. May 22, 1950. [The Deputy-Leader of the Opposition (Mr W. Nash) said: “The import licences are issued under the authority of the Minister of Customs and only in special cases were applications referred to the Minister. I know of no case mentioned by your correspondent.”]
