Coral Arc in Work Coral Arc, whose preparation for some of the main handicaps this season was checked under the threat of unsoundness, should be well forward for important races early next season, if he stands tin to his work. He moved nicely over half a mile on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday. The Coronach six-year-old has had only one race this season. Last season he won £7040 for his Dunedin owner, Mr A. N. Smith, for whom Ballochmyle also races. Well Related In steady work at Riccarton as a member of C. Emerson’s team is the unraced Defaulter filly, Tallahassee. Her dam. Lady Sylvia, is a sister to the good winner, Distinction, being by Foxbridge from Arawa Rose, by Musketoon from Wee Rose, by Wairiki from Miss Rose, by Dreadnought. Emerson is also preparing for racing the brown mare. Fricka, a daughter of the Melbourne Cup winner, Wotan, and the Defoe mare, Starlet. Easter Sale Purchase A yearling filly by Defaulter from Bonny Chela, secured for 300gns by Mr E. E. Fresh Starts The Defaulter two-year-old, Declare, \Vas put back into work this week by J. C. Tomkinson. Declare has been having an easy time since the Easter meeting at Riccarton. His last race was in the Autumn Nursery Handicap, in which he was narrowly beaten by the promising My Hero. Tomkinson has also made another start with' Quarry, a two-year-old by Treasure Hunt from Hunting Princess. Quarry had one race at the New Zealand Cup meeting but, as he was growing rapidly, he was put aside. He has thrived during his spell, and has built into a commanding youngster. Promising Hurdler Kirkella continues to make good progress in his education as a hurdler under the direction of the Riccarton trainer. H. Nurse. Ridden by E. A. Winsloe, the Solicitor General gelding gave a clever exhibition over six hurdles at Riccarton yesterday. He is quick-footed, and his jumping was fast and clean. At this stage of his education, Kirkella is showing as much promise as a hurdler as did his half-brother. Cottingham, whose many successes included the Grand National Hurdles in 1937. Golden Amber Fit Golden Amber, Conclusion, and Designation will be members of E. W. A. Rcsewarne’s team to race at the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting. Golden Amber, one of the best South Island three-year-old fillies of her year, has done little racing this season. She Reappeared in the sprint at the recent Amberley meeting, but lost her chance at the start. She showed that she was in good order for future races when she galloped four furlongs on the trial grass at Riccarton yesterday in 49 3-ssec. Finished Racing Although the imported horse, Duccio, is engaged in the Cornwall Handicap, principal event on the first day of the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting, his owner, Mr J. Macky, jun., said at the week-end that the horse had finished racing and would be retired to the stud. Duccio won five races in Italy, and in one of them he defeated the champion, Tenerani, over a mile and a quarter. He did not produce his best form in England, gaining only three minor placings. In New Zealand, Duccio has had three races for two wins and a fourth. His minor placing was in his first outing at the Te Aroha meeting, in which he showed brilliant speed, but failed to run on after getting his tongue over the bit. At his next two attempts he won the Avondale Mount Eden Handicap, six furlongs, and the Waikato Hamilton Handicap, one mile and a quarter.
