HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS’ ASSOCIATION FORTY DEBUTANTES Miss D. Bone, president of the Christchurch High Schoo] Old Girls’ Association, and Miss J. Stewart, principal of the school, last evening enjoyed the proud privilege of welcoming into the social life of Christchurch 40 debutantes, all former pupils of the high school. The occasion was the annual ball given by the association, but this year it derived added importance from the fact that it marked the golden jubilee of the foundation of the association. Five hundred guests were present in the Winter Garden and all enjoyed the excellent arrangements macle for their comfort and entertainment by members of the organising committee, Mesdames G. Maginness, R. W. Glen D. Millar. O. Michel. N. C. Greager, N. Hildyard, G. H. Kissel. J. Cruickshank. Misses Bone. E. Cornyns Thomas, O. Eslick. J. Anderson/ J. Netting. J. Hanham. M. Cunliffe. C. Richmond, and M. B. Kissel (dance convener). Miss Bone wore a frock of black moire taffeta. lightened by a brilliant brooch and a large pink velvet rose on the shoulder. Miss Stewart wore a frock of wine red taffeta, and, like Miss Bone, carried a posy, the gift of the Old Girls’ Association. Mrs D. Miller, vice-president of the association. wore a draped frock of black silk crepe. It was an evening of great achievement for Miss E. Cornyns Thomas, who received many congratulations on the result. She directed the presentation ceremony for which sh ? had previously trained the debutantes. and she was responsible for a novel spectacular item. It was a minuet, danced by the debutantes, and it brought forth spontaneous applause from the guests. It was followed by a waltz in which only the debutantes and their partners took part. Mis, Thomas wore a frock of red and pervenche blue shot taffeta. The guests of honour were Miss J. Stewart, Miss M. Samuel. Miss A. Freeman. Mr R. S. W. Owen (representing the Parent-Teacher Association) and Mrs Owen. Mr G. A. G. Connal (representing the Board of Management) and Mrs Connal. and representatives of the following Old Pupils’ Associations:—Avonside Girls’ High School. Christchurch West, St. Margaret’s College. Rangi Ruru. Timaru High School. Southland High School. Columba College, Otago High School. Nelson Girls’ College, St. Hilda's College. To Wai Pounamu. St. Mary’s Convent, Cathedral Grammar School, and a representative from the staff of the Girls’ High School. The debutantes, a very attractive group, all wore white or cream frocks, and each carried a posy presented to her by the Old Girls’ Association. They were Misses Leslie Ashworth, Leonie Barker.
