HOUSEWIVES IN BRITAIN

DOCTOR’S COMMENT ON SURVEY PROBLEM OF MOTHERS WHO GO OUT TO WORK (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDONj May 23. Surveys had drown that only a quarter of the housewives in some working class industrial areas were properly fed, that one-third of them had had no holiday since their marriage, and that one-third of them had no leisure time at all, said Dr. J. L. Burn, Medical Officer of Health for Salford, addressing a conference of domestic science teachers at Manchester. Dr. Burn said working-class mothers were feeding their families more and more on meat pies, in which the meat content was no more than 7 per cent. It was plain that a tremendous amount of work had still to be done to encourage proper feeding and health education. The saddest and hardest problem of all, however, was created by a number of mothers of young children who went out to work. “There may be an economic necessity for it,” said Dr. Burn, “but the country is going to suffer for it.”
